New style earrings

A person can never have too many earrings. I've been playing with some new ideas and these posted are my latest design. A little of this and that, they are more artisan made with the addition of paint, hole punching, flattening (flower cap), wire wrapping (leaf)and embossing (background). A bit more time intensive, but more fun that my regular "ball and stick" type. Too fun.

Wow, this turned out to be very challenging. It seemed impossible for me to slip out of my normal mode of simplicity. I made and remade this piece a few times, considered doing something much more elaborate with all the beads, but had a totally different design in mind that would not have worked well with the focal. Because the glass heart focal is so gorgeous by itself I chose to keep it simple and will use the other beads for my other design project tucked at the back of my brain.

So, I used the focal glass heart - it is large and detailed so I didn't want to mess it up with a lot of detail. The toggle was used in a different area - it's used to hang the focal and has a nice cross hatch design which complimented the Vintaj oversized rings. This is the first time I've used mixed metals in a piece. Find copper, gold, sterling and brass all mixed together - subtle but effective. I also had some handmade red glass beads of my own that were the perfect complimentary red color that I just had to use. I used one of the sweet little hearts hanging from the toggle. I'm happy with the piece - simple, sweet heart. Cute name - Sweetheart!

EARRINGS: I also made some earrings with the other beads Kathy gave me and I just love them. They perfectly match 2 outfits of mine - I've been looking for that perfect coral color - thanks so much Kathy! I love it all.

EARRINGS: Made a 2nd pair using Kathy's beads and copper bead cap and hand made copper ear wires, again for that perfect outfit - a perfect match! Thanks, Kathy!

EARRINGS #3: I just can't get enough of them. Just finished these. Vintaj leaves, dapped, painted with Alcohol Inks, and I used Kathy's wonderful beads (my turquoise). I live in the southwest and these are our colors. I love them. Southwest Fall!

Necklace #2, a little slow out of the starting gate, I quit trying so hard (another lesson learned...) and went for what I love the most - asymmetrical designs. I totally love this choker - will wear it often, and really love the colors.
Beads used by Kathy are the mint green, carnelians, copper corns, one black, one coral. This is such a fun and goofy piece. Thanks for being patient with me.

Bead Soup Exchange meeting a big success

While on vacation I was able to meet up with my partner, Kathy, and we did our exchange in person. (see former post for details). My sis and I and Kathy enjoyed some Peets coffee/snacks while chatting about all of our commonalities. Here is a pic of the 2 of us and my wonderful beads that she gave to me. Wow, coincidence? Miracle? Fate? Karma? Whatever, here is my unusual story.

Beadsoupers... check it out. I'm travelling and arrived at my destination of Portland, Oregon, for a nice visit with my sister for a couple of weeks. Well, guess what? My Beadsoup exchange partner lives in ....ta da da..(you guessed it) Portland, Oregon, not far from my sisters house. We have decided to meet and exchange, rather than snail mail and exchange. I can't believe how funny this is. Stay tuned - I'm number 341, so many of you won't get to read about this... I can't imagine that most of you will wade through 341 blogs... but I could be wrong! Enjoy your exchange as we will ours.

Greetings from thejoyfulgem :-).

I'm number 341, holy cow! Today I started reading some of the other blogs, as Lori suggested. I also got a kick out of reading some comments by other soup newbies! Words like "terrified", "disapointment" and feelings like nervous, lack of courage, not good enough spoke to me. We humans are so funny. I can admit I felt the same way after looking at all the names that came in front of mine, many of which I recognize as "famous" writers, teachers, designers (or all of the above). However, we will do our best with what limitations we have in time, talent and treasure. I've thought of giving up my stores, the "hobby", the mess, many many times. But, something keeps me at it, although not as much as I used to, I still enjoy the creativity, colors and friendships developed from these kinds of events and beading in general. I also get discouraged, feel not "good" enough, or as good as (fill in the blank with your favorite famous person). However, it's fun to look back over the last several years and see how far I have come.

Take heart, have fun, do your best,enjoy the journey, put aside negative thoughts words and actions, and make something!

I'll try and take my own advice! Hold me accountable, please :-)

Bead Soup Party!

I signed up for the Bead Soup exchange. This will be a new and fun event for me. Those with blogs, who signed up before the expiration date (Aug.3rd) will be paired up with another new friend. We have been asked to exchange a focal bead, a nice clasp, and some complimentary beads. I'll photograph the beads I receive and show them here. In addition to that, we will make some kind of beautiful wearable work of art and photograph that for final viewing on September 17. That is the PARTY DATE and it will be fun to blog-hop and see what everyone else makes. I've never done this one before but used to do similar exchanges in EBAY bead groups. Was always fun to challenge the creativity using someone elses choice of beads.

I have a vacation planned so will be pressed for time, but will do my best to be the best bead partner ever!

Angels We Have Heard On High....IN JULY?

These sweeties are also a part of my Christmas in July sale, listed in my Artfire store. I just love these little gems, and I especially love the photograph. I've been experimenting with Picnik.com, a free service for a few pics at a time. There are all kinds of fun things you can do for photo enhancement. This "lights" feature is my favorite. I love the way it adds a glow around the lights. Makes me look really smart and creative, but really it's so easy - the program does it all.

I'm back at promoting my stores. You have to toot your own horn in this world... I'm finding out - especially in this competitive world of jewelry design. Guess the "quick" part is what takes my breath away and continues to capture my interest.

Half the fun of selling online is figuring out the presentation. I'm enjoying the art in the photography as much as I am making the jewelry. It's difficult to buy something that you can't see in person, hold in your hand, and "try on" for sizing, etc. I do my best but have the same reservations when buying online for myself.

With all that in mind, here is my latest pair of earrings - so pink, purple and pretty, using Vintaj brand findings and Swarovski crystals in purple. The 10mm pink rondelle is a smooth rose quartz - with niobium ear wires. Valentine priced at only $15.00. Check them out - and Happy Valentines Day.

As dead as 1000Markets has been for me this year (is anyone buying anything?) I thought I'd add these there to test 2010. Actually I tried to add to Artfire (also pretty quiet these days) but their photo uploader seems to be down for the moment. I'll try later.

These are on 1KM for $22.00. They are Russian Amazonite, Garnet and glass with Vintaj Brand findings - lots of wire wrapped beads - quite sweet, hanging at 2 1/2".

Old Christmas Corsage

Two old Christmas Corsages... belonging to my Grandma. They are squashed, tattered, some green mold on the old, tiny mini pine cones, but do they bring back the memories. If I smell carefully, I can still smell a little Chantilly... or is it Shalimar? Grams got a new bottle every year from gramps - they were married for 60 plus years. I watched them grow old and now all I have are these corsages, lots of memories, pictures and a few odds and ends. Sigh - I always think of them a lot during this time of year as they made my birthday and Christmas so special.

I also fondly remember grams wearing these old tattered corsages on her collar on her wool coat. Rest in peace, dear ones. I miss you so much.

Sometimes I pick up cards that speak to me. This hand made drawing (and I have no idea how she did it) is made by "morrie" (written on the back of the card). Precious Metal Clay - PMC 101. My first class projects!

I've been taking some metals classes learning to solder, drill, polish, etc. It's been great fun and informative too - lots of hands on practice. An additional class in PMC really was a great time and I'm pleased with the results from my first attempts.

Gene Dietzen, Camas, Washington (Clear Skies Studios) has THE most up-to-date shop and provides all the materials and machines and instruction to get a person started on their way to metal smithing. I'm almost done and am loving my new skills. Now just need to figure out where to go from here.

Daylight savings... This has been such a difficult transition this year. Just try staying awake to see the end of a movie, and forget about waking up past sunrise. The years are still fleeting by - faster these days.

....sigh, and my piles of Joyce are still there.... so more on the subject of "Clearing space for a New You". Now it should read... for a new "YEAR".

Space Clearing...
1. Do I use it?
2. Do I need it?

4. Is it broken?
5. If lost in a fire? (would I feel the need to replace it?)
6. Would I want to manifest it 100 times?
7. What image and energy is this sending to the universe for me?
8. Does it bring in negative thoughts, emotions or memories?
9. If called to move 5 times this year, would I pack and move it?
10. Will this be of pleasure or use to my heirs.

If we answered no to any of the above, consider giving, donating or garage selling/clearing it out. Who would most benefit?

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR GOLD

To clean gold, you need cold water and ammonia. First, make a solution out of 50% cold water and 50% household ammonia in a cup. (Remember: Ammonia can ruin semi-precious stones. Use this method only for gold jewelry which contains no stones). Soak the jewelry for 15 minutes. Lift out gently and clean with a toothbrush. Let the jewelry drain on tissue paper.

How to care for diamonds

1. Clean your diamond jewelry regularly at home in an ultrasonic cleaner or by hand. To make your own jewelry cleaning solution, mix one part ammonia to six parts water.

2. Gently scrub the diamond piece with a small soft toothbrush to loosen dirt and restore the diamond's brilliance. Be careful not to scratch the metal setting. Always rinse after cleaning.

Cindy - here is my answer to your age old question, What Brings Me Joy.

Lots of things, for sure. My name for starters JOYCE. Born in December, the Joyful month, for us Christians, the month we celebrate the birth of our savior.
I even named my business after "joy" The JOYFUL Gem, because I am joyful so much of the time. It's in my personality, I was raised by joyful people, even though they weren't my parents, they said it was a JOY to help raise me. I'm grateful and JOYFUL that they did too. I exercise a lot, and that brings me joy - bringing wellness, peace and YOGA joy to others (endorphins help too).

So, there you have it - There is a smile on my face because it's a joy to write about joy too. The joy of the Lord is my strength. All of nature, trees, sunshine, flowers, colors, cool breeze, the breath - the joy and privilege of being able to take one more breath -

Avoid wearing jewelry while in contact with household chemicals, such as chlorine bleach. They can discolor or damage your jewelry mountings.

This little guy lives in Kenya - I'm fortunate enough to support him financially through a program at our church. There isn't a lot I can do about world hunger and suffering, but giving back my sales to support another family helps a little. Artfire, you gotta love it. It's pretty easy to use, and when you get some response, it's encouraging. I've enjoyed spreading the love this month, as I continue to weed through my large stash of beads, findings and other related items. One person's trash, is anothers stash! Although, I'm not in the habit of selling trash - there's some really good stuff in my store.

I just changed one of my categories from SENSATIONAL SALES to EIGHT $ EARRINGS.

A few months ago a local store carrying some 200 plus earrings closed their doors and returned my goodies. Well, I don't need 200 earrings and would prefer to continue my declutter goals. Trade Friendly?

In these slowing economic times one has to be creative. I've taken to adding lots of my bead/stash inventory of things I most likely won't be using, to my Artfire store. When the mood strikes me and I see something that catches my eye, I boldly go where most haven't gone before and ask that age-old question "Are you Trade Friendly"? Usually I get a big yes. Here is a great example of a very friendly, trade and otherwise, smart shop owner. We have just completed a trade where we are both happy. I got some great components, and earrings, and she got some of my stash.

New earrings loaded to my 2 stores yesterday. I just love these - love green, love danglies, love flowers, love copper, love wire wrapping. Cute little top wire wrapped bell flower bead above the Swarovski crystal was my inspiration, then the fabulous copper 3-drop chandelier. I move between easy, fast earrings like these, to the more modern wire types requiring more patience, and skill - I'm developing in both of those areas. wink

Back to the drawing board.

Wow, the last day of June as arrived - I cna't believe how fast time goes by. (seems faster as you get older.) Last Friday I was sick so here is a sweet reminder of life's important things... drawing from Noah's Ark as our guide...

"My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success."
"Very good," said the teacher.
Little Jenny was next:

Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn.

I thought of calling this post "what makes you happy", but decided no! I'm a person of color, that is to say, light flesh tones, (yes, that is a color) and what makes ME joyful is COLOR, lots of it. I picked up 3 strands of these wonderful colorful beads, one is never enough, and can't wait to use them. so many options, sizes, shades, different hues of the same shape of roundelle saucers, soft, loud, all gorgeous. I think these colors are breathtakingly beautiful - how about you?

Dear Tide, I am writing to say what an excellent product you have! I've used it all my married life, as my Mom always told me it was the best. Now that I'm in my fifties I find it even better! In fact, about a month ago I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse. My inconsiderate and uncaring husband started to belittle me about how clumsy I was, and generally started becoming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and somehow I ended up with his blood on my new white blouse! I grabbed my bottle of Tide with bleach alternative, to my surprise and satisfaction, all of the stains came out! In fact, the stains came out wo well the detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and then my attorney called and said that I was no longer considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband.

What a relief! Going through menopause is bad enough without being a murder suspect! I thank you, once again, for having a great product.

Well, gotta go, have to write to the Hefty bag people.

In many Eastern cultures, the Lotus Flower symbolizes purity, new beginnings and divine birth. The unfolding flower embodies the endless ocean of creation. And, because it has buds, blossoms, and seed pods simultaneously on the same plant, it has come to represent the past, present, and future.

Tomorrow is the last yoga class for my small group of 7, and I've made each student their own little yoga memory, the sterling silver lotus flower, connected to their favorite chakra meaning with the stone that represents the chakra. I hope they like it.

As a side note, these fabulous little sterling silver lotus flowers were purchased online from a fellow Artfire store called justjaynes.artfire.com. You may have noticed in my profile that I teach exercise classes to seniors. A regular feature in our class is our pre-class abdominal work, accomplished by laughter. There has been a lot of press about "Laughter Yoga" etc, lately, and in these economic time we can choose to either laugh or cry - I'm fighting hard to continue laughing. Also, my store name and my own name suggest a joyful, merry spirit and I try to live up to it.

As I receive jokes worthy of senior ears, I'll share them here too. I've been doing this for 5 years now and the same jokes are starting to come around again - and they're still funny to me.

Snickers - The Tailgater - priceless

A man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.
He said, 'I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. 'I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally.."I assumed you had stolen the car!"

I have 2 storefronts. This 2nd store on Artfire (opened in March) was mainly set up to provide me more room at home. Clutter is a real problem for me - I find I just have too much stuff! Jewelry components once purchased but never used, seem to get in the way. Years later, redefining my style, I realize I probably won't use some of this and maybe it's time to pass it on to someone else at my cost.

Sensational Sales Earrings: This is another sad tale of a local store that chose to close their doors for many reasons, during these slower times. I had a strong presence in this lovely store and now have a box full of great earrings. There's nothing wrong with these, short of sitting on the shelf for awhile, and I've been slowly polishing and photographing each pair - all priced at $8.00 per pair, buy 2 and they are $7.00 per pair, buy 3 and they are $6.00 per pair. (I'll throw in the matching earring for free - ha) .

Every Friday I'm choosing 4 items for my Fabulous Free Freight Friday (say that furiously fast 4 times) sale - where I'll pay your freight on any one of the 4 featured items (I choose them weekly - randomly).
